“Costume designer Eric Daman is arguably as integral to the creation of a television character as the show’s writers.” —The New York Times.
Eric Daman is the costume designer for the CW’s new series The Carrie Diaries. Prior to that, he was the costume designer for the six season duration of Gossip Girl. Eric also designs costumes for film with 10 productions to his credit; the most recent being the 2012 release Fun Size. Other big-screen films include The Door in the Floor with Jeff Bridges and Kim Basinger, Anamorph with Willem Dafoe, Tenderness with Russell Crowe and Laura Dern, The Architect with Isabella Rossellini and Hayden Panettiere, Train Wreck with Gretchen Mol, and The Guitar directed by Amy Redford.
Eric’s costume design and fashion styling career began during his enrollment at the Paris Sorbonne where he majored in French Literature, when he was discovered as a fashion model by Steven Meisel. He soon appeared with Kate Moss for several of the photographer’s Calvin Klein campaigns. Also featured on the cover of L’Uomo Vogue, and within the pages of many fashion and lifestyle periodicals, Eric worked with highly respected photographic talents including Mario Testino, Peter Lindberg, Terry Richardson, and Pierre & Gilles.
Before the camera Eric was exposed to the art of styling behind it. Following a move to Manhattan, Eric began styling looks for shoots in magazines including Spin, ID, The Face, Visionnaire and others. Eric’s career as costume designer for film began with The Adventures of Sebastian Cole, and for television began with assisting Patricia Field on Sex & the City for 3 seasons— the team was awarded an Emmy for their work together in 2002.

Hi Mr. Daman, I am an aspiring costume designer and you are one of the biggest sources of inspiration to me. It would be a dream come true to work with you whether it be as an assistant or even as an intern. Is it possible for me to send you or one of your assistants my resume and cover letter? If so, please let me know where. Until then, I’ll continue to watch your amazing work on The Carrie Diaries and your other projects. Thank you so much!

What would recommend for curvy women to wear this Spring
and Summer? What color palette as well?
#5 by EricDamanStyle on April 27, 2013 - 3:28 pm
I <3 CURVY WOMEN! BIGGEST FASHION MISTAKE IS COVERING UP A CURVY FIGURE WITH TOO MANY LAYERS OF FLOWING FABRIC. KEEP YOUR CONTOUR TIGHT & CLASSY WITH PIECES THAT SKIM YOUR SKIN AND CARESS YOUR CURVATURE. WEAR TOPS WITH UPWARDLY MOBILE EMPHASIS FOR HEIGHT AND ACCESSORIES THAT LIFT THE LIGHT TO YOUR FACE HAIR AND EYES! AND GO EASY ON WEARING TOO MUCH BLACK. IT'S SLIMMING BUT GETS DULL EASILY. GIVE YOURSELF SOME HEIGHT WITH SOME CUTE & COMFY HEELS. HAVE FUN WITH PRETTY SPRING AND FESTIVE SUMMER PALETTES! LET ME KNOW HOW IT GOES. XOXOE

Holy crap, young Mr. Daman…once a mere (but very
excellent) DJ in a WalMor basement, and now doing pretty impressive
stuff! (And on Wikipedia as one of the famous former
students…probably good that you moved on to less redneck things.)
I’d ask for fashion advice, but fear it’s too late…did ultimately
move to L.A., but ended up as engineer and dad, so pretty screwed
on fashion sense. Anyway, congrats, very impressive stuff! (the

Hey Eric! I am a big fan of your costume designs and style! I love gossip girl costumes specially chuck bass suits and big round pocket square just true masterpiece! But I always had a question about nate. Why nate never had belt on his pants? Is that fashion statement too? Thank you can’t wait to hear your reply.

Good question! I dont think belts are that flattering on trim dudes. It can bulk a guy up real quick. It’s also kind of Nate’s laid back style. XOXOE

Hey Eric! I m a huge fan of ur clothes of gossip girl. I really love Serena’s style. Can u give me sm tips how to carry her style?
#18 by EricDamanStyle on January 21, 2013 - 5:59 pm
Hi Annie
Serena’s style is as much about her attitude as it is her wardrobe. I always say “Style is 20% Fashion & 80% Confidence.” That would be jsut as true for Serena’s way with her wardrobe. Some of Serena’s signature look is inspired by Kate Moss. Serena has an unplanned organic elegance as if her look came together casually with no effort at all. It’s not so much about what Serena wears as much as how she wears it!

I really, really, really, enjoy and love your work!! Is there a possibility, a chance for me to work as an intern for you? Hi Eric I read your comment on assistant opportunities and I know assistant positions for you are closed but as a recent graduate in art and textile design,What advice could you give me on life after the unpaid internships? Is a design assistant position the way to go?
Thank you
Alison
#35 by EricDamanStyle on January 10, 2013 - 2:02 pm
Hi Alison
If you have maxed out your internship possibilities, a next obviously good idea is to seek out a position as an assistant, or as an assistant to an assistant, so you can stay inspired and keep your opportunities open for learning and succeeding! Keep your portfolio fresh and you resume updated so when the time comes for advancement, you’ll be ready!
Don’t forget to watch The Carrie Diaries this coming Monday, January 14 at 8/7c!

Dear Eric,
I’m looking for 2 of Chuck Bass’s tuxs. The light blue one he wore to the prom, the other one is the white one with black trimming. Hope you can help.
Best regards,
Kemal
#37 by EricDamanStyle on January 10, 2013 - 12:21 pm
Hey Kamal,
Thanks for asking! Martin Margiela designed the white tux with black trim that Chuck wore to the white party. I got it at Barneys New York. PS: It “reads white” on TV but is actually cream. Believe it or not we can’t put anyone in actual white on TV, the brightness of white being too “hot” for filming. Have you heard the term “Too much for color TV?” Well it’s sometimes it’s literally true about fashion, too! We work around it!

#38 by Oskar on January 6, 2013 - 8:24 pm
Eric, what would you say is the key elements of Chuck’s style? I’ve always admired the “all out” and “I don’t care” style that Chuck is sporting. Your work when putting together his iconic style is truly one of a kind, and I am always wearing outfits inspired by your work on Chucks style! I would love to get some tips from you!
Thanks!
#39 by Oskar on January 8, 2013 - 3:33 pm
By the way, the clothes he is wearing on the series, are they bespoke/tailored or “off the shelf” products that have been altered? (I realize that they are both, but are there a list of brands/suppliers used throughout the years?)
And how on earth do you find all the great clothing?
A big thanks!
#40 by EricDamanStyle on January 21, 2013 - 6:11 pm
Oskar
We didn’t really keep a list, exactly. Most of Chucks looks are a combination of bought, constructed, and sample pieces! Sorry I can’t be more specific. I am sure if you google it you will find a good list of options and go-tos!

Thanks,

#44 by EricDamanStyle on January 10, 2013 - 12:26 pm
Hey again Kamal
I think the blue tux Chuck wore to the prom was a sample that we had to send back. Martin Greenfield custom made the cream tux with light robbins egg blue shawl collar/lapel that Chuck wore to marry Blair in Central Park!
Hope this helps!
